This edited collection presents theoretical approaches and case studies that explore how presence can be experienced in museum spaces and what role technology can play in visitor experiences. It considers the theoretical underpinnings of the concept ‘presence’ for museum spaces, offering a critical examination of how immersive and other emerging technologies can affect, diminish or enhance our sense of presence and embodiment. Through an international range of case studies and innovative projects, this volume considers emerging technologies – including virtual reality, augmented reality, interactive (multisensory) installations, and AI – alongside different aspects of presence, including immersion, embodiment, empathy, emotion, engagement, and affect.

The first edition of IAPT PHCOMMISSION project features the work of the artist Nicolas Lambouris under the title One Hundred Fifty Eight Attempts for Revision. The book features texts by art theorists Yiannis Toumazis and Elena Stylianou, and sociologist Andreas Panayiotou. The texts examine Lambouris’ work from various perspectives, exploring the artistic qualities and allusions that precede it and place it in the context and tradition of international artistic photographic practices, as well as analyze and excavate the political and sociocultural backdrop that corresponds with the work. Under these conditions, the work is positioned in the frame of reference regarding global debates on issues of collective memory, national narratives and cultural identity.

The publication departs from George Lanitis’ book, Cyprus: Island of Aphrodite [Νάσος τας Αφροδίτας], published in 1965, in Nicosia. Fifty-five years on, Cyprus: Island of Aphrodite manifests both as an artistic and historical artefact, a segment of a ‘curated’ archive of Cypriot imagery and it becomes a tactile and conceptual point of departure for the new publication. Cyprus: Island of Aphrodite II, meticulously reproduces the original book, only this time, ‘new’ photographs –photographs from Lanitis’ archive– are introduced and partially overlaid on top of the original pages in an attempt to renegotiate and adress the islands’ visual past and meaning, through the creative process of photographic selection, exclusion and erasure.

In 2018, IAPT Press published its first book which resulted from the project Ar[t]chaeology. Ar[t]chaeology was a collaborative research project investigating the relationship between archaeology and contemporary art photography. It involved meetings with international artists, a roundtable discussion, a visual publication and an exhibition, all aiming to critically negotiate issues such as the fabrication of narratives and the possibility of re-imagining history, the construction of archives and their politics, and processes of tracing and collecting. The final publication consists of two volumes: one outlining the process and one that could serve as an exhibition catalogue.

Visual Infotainment in the Political News:
A cultural approach in the post-truth era

This article introduces the concept of visual infotainment, the aspects of infotainment found in visual artefacts employed in the news. Using a case study, it examines the photographs published in the digital media to report on the negotiations between the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities, which took place in 2016 and 2017. A four-level visual framing analysis is used to identify a consistent set of frames. It aims to identify the political ideologies that appear to be behind the visual infotainment in these pictorial reports, and the specific ways in which hard news can be transformed into soft news. The research confirms the presence of visual infotainment elements of personalisation, emotion, morbidity and sensationalism. Overall, the study shows that visual infotainment serves to establish visual frames produced by and for contradictory propagandas, one of which favours ethnic nationalism while the other promotes conflict resolution.
